Art in Public Space Tyrol 2026

dip your finger in the mountain
Ren Loren Britton

Ren’s hand, a white person’s hand with many silver rings on it presses into dirt with grass all around. It is sunny, and the grass is just coming back to life: its spring.

Context: This workshop is part of Ren Loren Britton´s project sensory, sculptural, seats supported by the funding initiative Art in Public Space Tyrol 2026: www.koer-tirol.at. This workshop emerges from the artistic research and work of artist & designer, Ren Loren Britton: https://lorenbritton.com/ – a KÖR Grant receiver for 2026.

Workshop invitation:
Ever wanted to dip your fingertips into some mud? Let’s make a hand support for that. Ever wanted to smell the rush of the river close to your nose but not get wet? Let’s make a sling for that. Ever wanted to lay down and look just at the tops of the pines? Let’s make a bench for that.

In this half day workshop participants will be invited to a multi-part embodiment, play and prototyping workshop to co-design possibilities for making mountain-spaces accessible, pleasurable and open for us.

How can space become fluid and open for trans* and Disabled people in the mountains? How is this already the case and what kind of supports might be needed so that we can express our trans*crip desires in and with the mountains all around in Innsbruck? This workshop opens a space where participants will be invited to feel themselves in the mountains. We will consider together the trans*crip ways that natural environments already hold us and prototype all sorts of sculptural containers, boards, benches, crutches, slings, shivs and wedges that might support our bodies towards feeling even more welcome in this mountain-scape. All forms of opening, holding and re-negogiating space will be welcomed.

Access: In this workshop we will take regular breaks, work in spoken and written English (with informal translation into German possible), have a schedule ahead of time, prioritize slowing down and attuning to our bodies rather than moving fast and exhausting ourselves, there will be printed documents for review and hands on cardboard prototyping, all access needs are warmly welcomed to be sent to Ren ahead of time for caring + planning.

Honorary for workshop participation: Each participant receives 50 Euros compensation for participation in the workshop.

Schedule:
hour one: Hello & Welcome, Access Check-In, Collective Conditions, Hybrid Collaboration Agreement & Access Rider Document, Documentation Agreements, Research presentation from Ren so far, Snack and Care Set Up.
break
hour two: Feeling ourselves in the mountains through sensory exercises: practicing with trauma aware methods focusing with our mountanous landscape: what are five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste (all related to the mountains) – sharing and documenting our experiences.
break
hour three: experimental body movement time – practice ways of orienting our bodies in the environments around us that feels aligned with the kinds of sensory inputs that bring us pleasure and connection to the natural environment around us. Work in groups of three: one person tries out a position, one person takes a photo of that person in this position, a third person writes down a description of how this orientation experiment went – repeat.
break
hour four: material prototyping the kinds of supports that would be needed to support our emergent desires with the mountanscape around us: what kind of furniture, support or container would you need to enable a way of relating to the mountain that opened through this embodiment practice time?
break
end: share gratitude, review the collaboration agreement, conclusion – sharing & wrap up.
