Project description

Glass and Not Glass tells the story of ice crystals that have been evolving synchronously with a contemporary human generation. Since the closure of the mine Alpeiner Scharte in the Vals Valley seventy years ago, fragile ice formations in the shape of human palm-sized flowers have been growing in the mine at a height of 2,750 metres above sea level. The temporary installation was based on sculptural recordings and reproduced casts, which were shown until the end of May 2016 in the greater area of Innsbruck in cooperation with museums, cultural and educational institutions, public offices and companies, who all made their display cases and public display areas available for the purpose. This cooperation was intended to open up space for discourse, whereby historical events are viewed through the eyes of today’s experience and occurrences, and new languages and forms for the representation of culture and society are thus admitted.

The installation Glass & Not Glass by Gregor Neuerer consists of reproduced casts of ice crystals in various materials, which will be shown until the end of May 2016 in the greater Innsbruck area in cooperation with museums, cultural and educational institutions, companies and businessmen who make their showcases and public display areas available. Posters and a text printed as a folder accompanied these sculptural stagings. Glass & Not Glass are set against the background of the molybdenum mine Alpeiner Scharte in the Valser Valley at 2,750 metres above sea level. It was commissioned by the Nazi regime at the end of the Second World War and built with the help of forced labourers.
